If you've ever dealt with a clogged drain, you know just how truly frustrating it can be. Standing in front of the sink hoping that the standing water will evacuate through the drain only to find that hours later the situation hasn't changed can really take the wind out of your sails. You may use over-the-counter plumbing treatments to no avail and then scramble to find the money to pay for a plumber. However, while clogged drains appear to come out of nowhere, they often build up over a period of time. That's why prevention is so important. Use this information to learn more about what you can do to keep your drains from getting clogged.

Drain Strainers

The first thing you should do when you're looking to keep clogged drains at bay is purchase drain strainers. Though the devices are quite small, they can be powerful tools when it comes to keeping your drains clear.

A drain strainer looks like a small hairnet. It is covered in tiny holes that are just big enough to let water go through but small enough to prevent other items from entering your plumbing system. This means that things like hair or soap chips, which can accumulate in drains and cause serious blockages, are stopped in their tracks by the strainer.

You can find drain strainers at a local hardware store. To use drain strainers, simply affix them firmly over each of the drains in your home. Be sure to check the strainers periodically to make sure that the debris hasn't built up too much. If you find that it has, empty the contents into a trash can and put the strainer back into place.

One-Ply Tissue

The next thing you want to do in your fight against clogged drains is consider switching to one-ply tissue. If you've been using two-ply tissue for quite some time, one-ply may now be the better option.

One-ply tissue is very biodegradable. What this means is that when the material touches the liquid in the toilet bowl, it readily dissolves. Because two-ply tissue is thicker, it doesn't dissolve as quickly. This could result in a blockage if the tissue starts to build up in your pipes.

You have what it takes to keep your drains running clearly. Don't wait; start using these tips right away so you can keep clogged drains from becoming an issue in your home.
